An All-Ages Shape Drawing Activity
An open-ended prompt can let different people work at their own level of detail. The shared action is finding a possibility in an outline; one person may make a simple object while another develops a more elaborate character.
Try a practical approach
Match the materials to the person
Offer tools that are comfortable for the participant and paper large enough for their marks. A younger child may describe an idea before drawing; another artist may prefer a longer independent sketch. All-ages guidance does not imply identical abilities or a required amount of detail.
Keep the interpretation open
Let the participant decide whether the shape is a whole object or one small part of something larger. A descriptive sentence can accompany the drawing if storytelling appeals. The shape book is an invitation to create, not a contest requiring every person to finish the same picture.
Keep the next idea open
Shape Drawing Challenge gives artists 16 repeated beginnings, six illustrated examples per shape, and room for 480 independently chosen drawings.
Try the separate website exercise or print the website idea planner.
